Key Focus This Week:
This week focus: Market Volatility Amid Hot Inflation and Tech Sell-Off
This week, global financial markets were driven by a combination of inflation data, valuation concerns in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector, and geopolitical risks. In the United States, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 3.7% year-over-year in September, showing persistent inflationary pressures. Meanwhile, semiconductor and select AI-related stocks experienced notable sell-offs, placing downward pressure on the Nasdaq Index. Although U.S. Treasury yields pulled back during the week, markets remained focused on the high-interest-rate environment, returns on AI infrastructure investments, and associated financing risks.
In the energy market, tensions in the Middle East drove crude oil prices higher, with WTI crude futures settling above $100 per barrel on Friday, fueling concerns over energy costs and sustained inflation. Major U.S. stock indices showed divergence: the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq declined, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted modest gains, reflecting a rotation of capital out of high-growth tech stocks and into relatively defensive sectors.
Last Week’s Key Economic Data & News Recap
U.S. Inflation Heats Up, Renewing Focus on Interest Rate Outlook
On October 14, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the CPI rose 0.6% month-over-month and 3.7% year-over-year in September 2026, up from 3.4% in August. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, increased 0.3% month-over-month and 2.6% year-over-year. Notably, a 9.1% monthly surge in gasoline prices served as a major driver of the headline CPI increase. The data indicates that the descent of inflation continues to face resistance, prompting the market to reassess whether the Federal Reserve will need to maintain higher interest rates for a longer duration.
AI and Semiconductor Stocks Pull Back, Prompting Re-evaluation of Investment Returns
U.S. tech stocks came under significant pressure this week as market focus shifted from the growth potential of AI-related enterprises to whether massive data center construction and infrastructure investments can translate into sufficient revenues and profits. Concerns over financing costs, debt levels, and the investment payback period intensified the sell-off in semiconductors and select AI infrastructure firms. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq recorded their weakest weekly performance since June, while capital rotated into defensive sectors such as utilities, energy, and consumer staples.
Middle East Tensions Drive Up Energy Prices, Crude Breaks $100 per Barrel
Escalating tensions in the Middle East heightened concerns over constrained crude oil supplies. During the week, Brent crude briefly approached $110 per barrel, while WTI crude futures settled above $100 per barrel on October 16. Rising energy prices not only supported select energy stocks but also increased the risk of secondary cost surges across transportation, manufacturing, and consumer sectors. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem also addressed the impact of energy price pressures on the interest rate outlook, as markets monitor whether high oil prices will prolong inflationary pressures.
Canadian Manufacturing Sales Rebound, Wholesale Trade Remains Weak
Statistics Canada reported on October 15 that manufacturing sales rose 1.5% month-over-month in August to reach CAD 79.9 billion, with gains recorded in 12 of 21 industries, led by strong performances in primary metals and chemical products. However, a 2.6% decline in transportation equipment sales partially offset these gains. Concurrently, wholesale trade sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons, as well as oilseeds and grains) fell 1.6% month-over-month to CAD 91.6 billion, primarily dragged down by motor vehicle and parts sales. The data reflects improving industrial activity in Canada, though demand patterns remain uneven across sectors.
U.S. Treasury Yields Pull Back, US Dollar Weakens Over the Week
Despite hot U.S. inflation data, market expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes did not permanently intensify. Dovish remarks from Fed officials tempered tightening expectations, while the tech stock correction drove investors toward government bonds. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell from 5.24% on October 9 to approximately 5.10% by October 16, while the 30-year yield declined from 5.60% to 5.43% over the same period. The U.S. dollar is poised for its first weekly decline in over a month, reflecting that shifts in rate expectations and risk appetite remain primary drivers in the foreign exchange market.
