Key Focus This Week:

Fed Minutes, U.S. Consumer Conditions, and Canadian Inflation

North American macroeconomic data are relatively less concentrated this week than in the previous two weeks. Investors will focus primarily on Federal Reserve policy signals, the state of the U.S. consumer, and Canadian inflation and consumption trends.

The Federal Reserve will release the minutes of its July monetary policy meeting on Wednesday. Although rates were left unchanged at that meeting, there were clear differences within the committee over whether further policy tightening was needed. Markets will focus on how policymakers assess inflation, employment, and the future path of interest rates. The Federal Reserve’s official website confirms that the minutes will be released on August 19.

Last week, both U.S. consumer and producer inflation showed some signs of cooling, while retail sales weakened, reducing market expectations for another near-term rate hike. However, energy-price risks stemming from the situation in the Middle East remain. This week’s minutes may therefore provide further clues as to whether the policy focus within the Federal Reserve is beginning to shift.

Following last week’s decline in U.S. retail sales, earnings from major retailers have become significantly more important this week. Home Depot will report on Tuesday, Target on Wednesday, and Walmart on Thursday. These dates have all been confirmed on the companies’ official investor relations pages.

Markets will focus on whether consumers are cutting back on discretionary spending, whether price sensitivity is continuing to rise, and whether housing-related spending remains constrained by high financing costs. Beyond revenue and profit figures, management commentary on future consumer behavior and demand in the second half of the year may be even more important. Reuters has also identified retailer earnings as a key focus for U.S. markets this week.

Canada’s latest consumer price report, released today, showed that headline inflation accelerated again, driven mainly by gasoline and travel-related prices. However, core inflation measures that better reflect broader price trends remained relatively stable overall. Markets will therefore pay closer attention to whether higher energy prices begin to spread further into other goods and services.

Canada will also release its latest retail sales report on Friday. The report will help markets assess whether the earlier improvement in the labour market is translating into more stable household consumption demand and will serve as an important indicator of the quality of Canada’s economic recovery. Statistics Canada has confirmed that the report will be released on August 21.

Week’s Key Economic Data & News Recap

U.S. Inflation Moderated

U.S. consumer price data released last week showed that both headline and core price pressures eased somewhat from previous levels. The producer price index released afterward was also stable, as lower goods prices offset part of the increase in service costs. Together, the two reports reduced concerns that the Federal Reserve would raise rates again in the near term.

U.S. Retail Sales Weakened, Bringing the Consumer Outlook into Focus

The latest U.S. retail sales report showed that consumer activity declined after several consecutive months of growth. Although energy prices and shifts in promotional timing affected the result, the data still raised concerns about whether household spending can continue to support the U.S. economy.

Canadian Manufacturing Maintained Moderate Growth as Wholesale Activity Improved

Canadian manufacturing sales continued to trend higher, although the overall increase remained limited. By contrast, wholesale trade improved more broadly across most industries and provinces. Taken together, the two reports indicate that Canadian business activity is recovering, although the pace of recovery continues to vary across sectors.

U.S. Equities Remained Near Highs, but Weak Consumer Data Cooled the Rally

Softer inflation data and generally strong corporate earnings briefly pushed the S&P 500 Index to a new high, with artificial intelligence and technology-related stocks continuing to provide important support. However, weaker retail sales data on Friday and a renewed rise in oil prices pulled the market back from its highs.

Middle East Tensions Pushed Oil Prices Higher Again

Limited progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations, together with persistent risks to shipping and tanker safety in the Strait of Hormuz, drove a notable rebound in international oil prices last week. Renewed increases in energy prices brought attention back to their potential impact on global inflation and central-bank policy, while gold was supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and lower expectations for further rate hikes.

Market Performance Review – Last Week

Canadian Equities:

Canadian equities remained broadly strong last week. The S&P/TSX Composite Index moved higher in volatile trading, supported by the energy, financial, materials, and technology sectors, and repeatedly reached new record highs. The index traded mainly in the 36,300–36,850 range, gained approximately 0.96% over five days, and closed at 36,730.27.

U.S. Equities:

The three major U.S. equity indexes remained near record-high levels last week. Markets stayed resilient on the back of softer inflation data, solid corporate earnings, and reduced expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes, but weaker consumer data, rising U.S. Treasury yields, higher oil prices, and a pullback in semiconductor stocks limited further upside. The S&P 500 Index traded largely within the 7,200.00–7,830.00 range, gaining 0.36% over five days to close at 7,785.76; the NASDAQ Composite traded around 26,400.00–26,900.00, gaining 0.14% over five days to close at 26,729.16; and the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained in a high-level range of approximately 53,000–54,100, gaining about 0.30% over five days to close at 53,732.41.

U.S. Bonds:

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield (CBOE Interest Rate 10 Year T Note, ^TNX) remained elevated and range-bound last week, trading between 4.61% and 4.74%. It rose approximately 0.8% over five days and closed at 4.696%. Early in the week, the yield climbed to around 4.74%, then fell as U.S. July CPI and PPI data came in below expectations and market expectations for a September Federal Reserve rate hike eased, briefly reaching around 4.61%. On Friday, however, rising oil prices, the fiscal deficit, and pressure from long-term Treasury supply pushed the 10-year yield back toward 4.70%.

Forex Market

The Canadian dollar strengthened sharply against the U.S. dollar last week after an initial decline. CAD/USD (CADUSD=X) traded in a range of approximately US$0.716–US$0.721, gained about 0.55% over five days, and closed Friday at US$0.7207, its highest level in nearly two months.

Gold & Silver Market:

Gold and silver generally moved higher in choppy trading last week, extending the previous week’s rebound before seeing some profit-taking after midweek gains. Based on the futures contracts shown in the charts, gold gained approximately 2.1% for the week, briefly approaching US$4,500 per ounce midweek before closing Friday at around US$4,432 per ounce. Silver performed slightly better, rising about 2.5% for the week; it climbed to nearly US$67 per ounce midweek before retreating to approximately US$64.92 per ounce.

Oil Market:

Brent Crude Oil Futures rose strongly last week amid wide swings. Brent climbed rapidly from around US$84 per barrel at the start of the week as U.S.-Iran negotiations reached a stalemate, Middle East tensions intensified again, and the risk of supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz increased, pushing prices briefly toward US$90 per barrel. On Thursday, Brent fell back toward US$87 per barrel after U.S. crude inventories increased by approximately 17.4 million barrels in a single week and both OPEC and the IEA lowered their oil-demand forecasts. The U.S. then indicated that it might maintain a long-term maritime blockade of Iran, while tanker attacks and the lack of progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations renewed concerns over Middle East oil supplies. Brent rebounded sharply on Friday, closing at around US$88.5 per barrel and gaining approximately 6.0% for the week.
